One number in that table is worth sitting with. Stats NZ counted 9,858 cafes and restaurants in the whole of New Zealand at February 2025, and 4,053 of them are in Auckland. That is 41%, so two in every five cafes and restaurants in the country are competing inside one region. Density like that changes what a missed call means. In a town with four takeaways, a customer who gets an engaged tone rings back. On Dominion Road they do not ring back, because there are eleven other options inside two hundred metres and the next one answers.
Auckland's takeaway trade is concentrated in the suburbs, not the CBD. Dominion Road alone carries one of the densest strips of Asian eateries in the country; Sandringham, Balmoral, Papatoetoe, Ōtāhuhu and Manurewa run on phone orders in a way the Viaduct simply doesn't. These are the venues where a missed 6pm call is a lost dinner, not a lost enquiry.
