Business counts from Stats NZ Business Demography Statistics, February 2025, by ANZSIC class. Stats NZ randomly rounds all counts to base 3, so these are close but not exact. Auckland Council is a unitary authority, so the regional figures below correspond closely to the city.

One number in that table is worth sitting with. Stats NZ counted 9,858 cafes and restaurants in the whole of New Zealand at February 2025, and 4,053 of them are in Auckland. That is 41%, so two in every five cafes and restaurants in the country are competing inside one region. Add the 3,003 takeaway food services and Auckland is carrying about a third of the national hospitality business count.

Density like that changes what a missed call means. In a town with four takeaways, a customer who gets an engaged tone rings back. On Dominion Road they do not ring back, because there are eleven other options inside two hundred metres and the next one answers.

Which Auckland venues still take most orders by phone?

Auckland's takeaway trade is concentrated in the suburbs, not the CBD. Dominion Road alone carries one of the densest strips of Asian eateries in the country; Sandringham, Balmoral, Papatoetoe, Ōtāhuhu and Manurewa run on phone orders in a way the Viaduct simply doesn't. These are the venues where a missed 6pm call is a lost dinner, not a lost enquiry.

They're also the venues where accent handling stops being a marketing line. A voice model that can't hear Ōtāhuhu, Papatoetoe, Māngere or Ōrākei will take the wrong address on delivery orders, and one wrong address costs more than a month of software.

How does Auckland traffic change your phone volume?

Auckland's dinner rush collides with its traffic. Callers ordering ahead on the drive home are ringing between 5.30 and 6.30 - the exact window when your floor staff cannot get to the phone. Every one of those calls is a customer who had already decided to buy from you.

What does an AI phone agent cost an Auckland venue?

Skai Solutions publishes NZ$325 a month for 500 included minutes and NZ$649 for 1,500, with extra minutes at NZ$0.87 and a one-off NZ$545 setup fee. Those exclude GST, so with 15% added they are NZ$373.75 and NZ$746.35, and a GST registered venue claims that back. Full detail sits on the New Zealand pricing page, and what an AI receptionist costs compares the pricing models across the market.

The comparison that decides it is a person. The adult minimum wage in New Zealand is NZ$23.95 an hour from 1 April 2026. Covering 5pm to 9pm seven nights is about 121 hours a month, so roughly NZ$2,990 once the 3% minimum KiwiSaver contribution is added, before holiday pay, ACC or cover for someone who calls in sick. Those hours are Skai Solutions' own arithmetic, shown so you can change them. Auckland labour is the tightest in the country and the New Zealand hospitality wage page works that side of it through properly.

Who should not buy this in Auckland

A CBD restaurant that takes almost every booking through an online system and answers a handful of enquiry calls a week does not need this, and NZ$325 a month will not pay for itself. Neither does a cafe that closes at 3pm and never takes an order by phone. The venues where the numbers work are the suburban takeaways and family restaurants doing volume on the handset between 5.30 and 8, which is a specific kind of business rather than all of them.

What Skai Solutions does on an Auckland phone line

You keep your existing number. Calls divert to Skai Solutions, and you can switch the divert on and off whenever you like. Live in five days, no new hardware, no lock-in contract. It connects to Kounta and Lightspeed among others, so orders land where your kitchen already looks.

If you are still deciding whether the category is right rather than which supplier is, the Skai Solutions guide to what an AI receptionist is and does is the place to start, and whether an AI receptionist actually works covers the evaluation question honestly, including what it does badly.
