An AI phone ordering system for takeaways answers your line, holds your full menu, takes the order in conversation and writes it into your POS as a ticket. Skai Solutions builds one for Australia and New Zealand. The catch is that most systems ranking for this search connect only to POS platforms nobody here runs.
It is 6.20pm on a Friday at an Indian takeaway in Papatoetoe. Two staff, one wok, eleven tickets on the rail. The phone rings, rings out, and rings again ninety seconds later - same number, because the caller is still hungry. Nobody in that kitchen is choosing to ignore it. There is no hand free.
The short answer. An AI phone ordering system for takeaways is a voice agent that answers your line, holds your full menu including modifiers and sold-out items, takes the order in conversation, and writes it into your POS as a ticket - no callback, no message. It differs from an AI receptionist, which answers and takes a message. The catch for an Australian or New Zealand operator is that most systems ranking for this search were built for the United States and connect to POS systems almost nobody here runs. That, not voice quality, is where these purchases come apart.
Almost every product here sits at one of three levels. Pricing pages rarely say which.
| Level | What happens on the call | What you get | Completes a takeaway order? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Message taking Voicemail, or a human answering service | Caller leaves a name and number | An email or text to ring back | No |
| 2. AI receptionist General-purpose voice agent | Holds a conversation, answers hours and location, books into a calendar | A transcript and a summary | Not into a POS |
| 3. Order-completing agent Hospitality-specific | Reads the menu, handles modifiers, confirms pickup time, writes the ticket | A docket in the kitchen | Yes |
Levels 1 and 2 are legitimate products, built for a business whose phone carries enquiries - a sparkie, an accountant, a clinic. Those can ring back in forty minutes and lose nothing. A takeaway cannot: a message reading "Mere rang about a family pack" is a receipt for revenue that went two doors down while she waited.
Read the integration list on any of the systems currently ranking for this search. Toast, Clover, Aloha by NCR, Olo, SpotOn, Resy, Tock - excellent products with deep US market share and almost no footprint in Australian or New Zealand hospitality. If the agent cannot write to your till, it is a level 2 product wearing level 3 marketing, and your staff still key every order in by hand at the busiest moment of the night.
Ask any vendor to name your specific system out loud rather than saying "most POS systems". Skai Solutions connects to Kounta/Lightspeed, Square, Impos, H&L POS, Tevalis, Revel, TouchBistro and Oracle MICROS. If yours is not on that list, we are the wrong buy, and we would rather say so here than in week three.
Voice quality is table stakes now. What separates products here is whether the agent has ever heard a call like yours.
None of that is exotic. That is Friday.
Before pricing any system, price what it replaces. Say you cover the phone properly through the dinner peak-5pm to 9pm, seven nights. That is 28 hours a week, roughly 121 hours a month.
Australian rate from the Fair Work Ombudsman: A$26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026, A$33.05 casual with the 25% loading. New Zealand rate from MBIE. Award classifications may sit above the national minimum. Hours and totals are Skai's own calculation, shown so you can change the inputs.
The honest version: nobody buys those hours separately. The phone gets answered by whoever is closest, already doing three other things, and the cost shows up as a slower pass and a shorter fuse rather than a line on a payslip. That does not make it free - it makes it invisible, which is worse.
It also lands in a sector with no margin left to absorb it. CreditorWatch's July 2026 Business Risk Index found more than one in eight Australian cafes, restaurants and takeaway food businesses closed in the twelve months to July - a 12.03% closure rate against a national average of 6.69%.

One thing worth checking with any vendor, ours included: is billing flat or per call? Per-call billing means your answering bill peaks in exactly the month your food and wage costs peak.
If your takeaway does twenty calls a week and most are "what time do you close", this is a solved problem and the answer is a decent voicemail greeting with your hours in it. Do not let anyone talk you into a A$299 monthly cost to fix a A$0 problem, including us.
Two more honest limits. If your menu changes daily - a genuine specials board, not a rotating dessert - you will spend real time keeping the agent current, and that upkeep is your job. And an agent transfers to a human when a conversation goes sideways, so someone still has to be reachable during service. It removes the routine ninety per cent. It does not remove the phone.
The switch is worth making when the phone carries money rather than questions: takeaway orders, bookings you cannot afford to drop, function enquiries worth hundreds each, and calls arriving while you are already on another one.
The reason a phone order is worth more than the same order through an app is arithmetic, not opinion. Delivery app commission fees runs one order through the marketplace, your own ordering site and the handset side by side.
A short call with your menu and your POS on the table. If your till is not on our list, we say so in the first ten minutes.
Book a Free DemoA voice agent that answers your phone line, holds your full menu including modifiers and sold-out items, takes the order in conversation and writes it into your POS as a kitchen ticket. It is distinct from an AI receptionist, which answers the call and takes a message for you to action later.
Only if the vendor has built that connection. Skai connects to Kounta/Lightspeed, Square, Impos, H&L POS, Tevalis, Revel, TouchBistro and Oracle MICROS. Many systems ranking for this search integrate with Toast, Clover, Aloha and Olo, which have very little presence in Australian and New Zealand hospitality. Ask for your system by name.
Yes, that is the main structural difference from putting a person on the phone. A human takes one call at a time and everyone else hears a busy tone or voicemail. Concurrency matters most between 5pm and 7pm, when a takeaway's calls arrive in clusters rather than evenly.
No. You keep your existing number and divert calls to the agent. That works for a landline, an Australian 1300 or 1800 number, or a New Zealand 0800. Confirm it with any vendor before you commit, and confirm what happens to the diversion if you want to take the phone back for an hour.
Some of them, at first, that is the fair answer. Older regulars in particular ring because they want a person. The mitigation is a fast, obvious path to a human: the agent should transfer on request without an argument, and you should listen to the first fortnight of transcripts rather than assume it is working.
